Top 10 Commanders in MTG's LOTR: Tales of Middle Earth

Hello, Planeswalkers! It's another fantastic day at Amazing Discoveries, and we've been eagerly diving into Magic: The Gathering's crossover with the venerable J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth. There are ta lot of potential commanders in the "Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth" set, and today, we'll count down the 10 legends we believe warrant a second look. Buckle up, as we embark on a journey of strategy, power, and epic gameplay!

10. Fangorn, Tree Shepherd

Starting off our countdown is the majestic Fangorn, Tree Shepherd. A leader of the Ents, Fangorn's ability to generate mana while attacking can build up a huge amount of ramp, something any green deck would benefit from. Add to that the fact that the mana won’t be lost between phases, and you have a high-powered tribal commander that also plays well in ramp and aggressive strategies.

9. Samwise Gamgee

Samwise Gamgee · The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth (LTR) #222 · Scryfall Magic: The Gathering Search

Samwise Gamgee stands firm at number nine. Generating food tokens is powerful, alongside his ability to create a reanimation engine with food tokens makes him a powerful commander in numerous ways. Samwise Gamgee shoots to the top of the list in Food Based strategies but is also a strong reanimation commander in a color combo that does not have as many choices for this strategy as other colors such as black. You can bring back sagas, artifacts, and legendary creatures, meaning there will be no shortage of targets to bring back to the battlefield.

8. Mauhur, Uruk-hai Captain

Mauhur, Uruk-hai Captain secures the eighth spot on our list. His ability to reinforce your Orc, Goblin, and Army creatures with +1/+1 counters for counter already placed is a cumulative effect that quickly allows your board to become overwhelming. The low casting cost as well means this ball gets rolling quickly, and puts your opponent in a difficult position very early in the game. Add to that the ability Menace and this card is getting in for commander damage very early and often.

7. Tom Bombadil

Tom Bombadil dances into our seventh spot. This unique commander breathes new life into Saga-centric strategies and nabs a spot on the list for his ability to fill that niche alongside his color identity alone. He is also a self-contained engine, bringing sagas into play as other sagas reach their climax. He also benefits from your sagas with Hexproof and Indestructible. Tom Bombadil is the premier commander for sagas, and will always fill that role for years to come.

6. Frodo, Sauron's Bane

At number six, we find Frodo, Sauron's Bane. An innocent-looking hobbit hiding a lethal ability, Frodo can catch your enemies off-guard. With a sweet color identity and a very low casting cost, Frodo can put a serious clock on your opponents both through his ability as well as commander damage. Any “Loses the game” commander with a CMC of 1 is a powerful force in and of itself, and this card does that while also utilizing the Ring Tempts You mechanic the set is known for.

5. Saruman of Many Colors

Ward, Mill, and free spells? Say less! With an enchanting defense mechanism in his Ward ability and an impressive mill capacity, Saruman offers a truly diverse gameplay strategy. His adaptability makes him a perfect fit for commanders who appreciate a flexible and unpredictable approach to the game. Play your opponent's cards with his free spell ability, and add some chaos into the mix! With a great color identity and a great stat line, this commander will be an awesome choice in a variety of EDH strategies.

4. Aragorn, the Uniter

Aragorn, the Uniter swings in at the fourth spot. His unique color-casting triggers reward you every time you cast spells of a particular color. With Aragorn, each color comes with its own advantages, from raising armies with white spells to strengthening creatures with green. His balanced prowess ensures every cast is a strategic win. 4 color commanders do not get enough love, and this card gives another fantastic choice to this neglected color combination.

3. Sauron, the Dark Lord

In the third place, we find the formidable Sauron, the Dark Lord. His power lies in forcing opponents to sacrifice legendary artifacts or legendary creatures whenever they target him, making him a highly resilient commander. With each opposing spell casting a potential risk for your enemies, Sauron embodies a threat that echoes throughout the game. Add to that his draw engine with the ring tempting you, and that engine’s synergy with discard strategies in a color combo known for discard, and you have a versatile and resilient commander that will certainly see a lot of play.

2. Sauron, the Necromancer

Sauron, the Necromancer [LTR]

Just shy of the top spot, Sauron, the Necromancer brings a dark charm to the battlefield. With his unique ability to resurrect fallen creatures from your graveyard, he's the ultimate commander for graveyard manipulation strategies. While black may have a lot of options when it comes to this strategy, few are as sweet as Sauron. Not only does he resurrect cards from your graveyard, he also is able to keep them in play if you have him as your Ring-bearer. Add to that the ability menace, and you can swing away while bringing your creatures back turn after turn.

1. Gandalf the White

Finally, at the zenith of our countdown is Gandalf the White. Flash is a powerful ability to have on a commander, and it is even more powerful once you add it to all of your legendary and artifact spells! This alone would warrant considering Gandalf for your command zone, but add to that the panharmonicon style effect and you have an absolute powerhouse of a commander.

And there you have it! From unyielding Ents to daring Hobbits and dreaded Necromancers, these commanders represent the fantastic gameplay options in "The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth" set. Remember, every game is a new journey – so, explore these commanders, test your strategies, and unleash your inner Planeswalker!
